Why the back hurts, methods so that it does not hurt and be healthy

why back hurts and what to do

Back pain is one of the most common complaints among people of working age. As a rule, by the age of thirty, almost everyone faces this problem at least once. These pains can unsettle us for a long time, deprive us of working capacity and sleep.

If we take it in percentage terms, then almost 80% of the population in all countries of the world has some kind of back problem. We can say that this is the second reason for visiting a doctor after, for example, a cold or flu. And most of all, the fact that these indicators are growing every year is depressing.

But what are the causes of back pain? How to deal with this problem? What can we do to keep our back healthy?

What is the reason for this urgency of this problem?

obesity and a sedentary lifestyle as a cause of back pain

Vertebral diseases of the peripheral nervous system are observed mainly in young and mature people and are the main cause of temporary disability. This is due to scientific and technological progress, which entails a sedentary lifestyle, which, in turn, deprives us of the opportunity to fully train and pump back muscles, which, as a result, leads to back pain.

Most modern people are forced to be in a static position for a long time with muscle tension. This applies to those who are constantly driving, who have sedentary work at the computer, who often make long journeys or flights, as well as those who are professionally involved in sports, have to carry weights or work for a long time in their personal plot.

Another acute problem of our time is overweight and obesity. Indeed, overweight and obesity provoke not only back problems, but also many other diseases.

Psychoemotional status also plays an important role.

This is a separate disease or symptom, why is this happening?

Back pain is not a separate disease, a separate nosological unit. This is usually a symptom of some kind of disease. Moreover, back pain can provoke both some diseases of the skeleton itself, its ligaments and tendons, and diseases of the adjacent nerves and tissues.

Sometimes, for example, when the back hurts, it can be a symptom of quite serious somatic diseases, diseases of the heart, stomach, pancreas, kidneys, organs and joints of the pelvis, and so on. And the doctor must be competent enough to differentiate it in time and refer the patient to a competent specialist. He should always keep in touch with other specialists: cardiologists, urologists, traumatologists, rheumatologists, gynecologists.

For example, one patient complaining that her back hurts was referred to a urologist. Which, by the way, was at first very surprised by this, since at first he did not see that the problem was in his part. But after additional examinations it turned out that her back pain was provoked by urolithiasis. And when the stones, which, I must say, were quite voluminous, were removed, the pain stopped.

Another case: a patient presented with severe pain in the thoracic spine, and as a result of the differential diagnosis, the doctor suspected that she had a myocardial infarction. She was urgently referred to a cardiologist, who confirmed it.

It is on the basis of differential diagnosis that sacroiliitis and aseptic necrosis of the femoral head are very often detected. In such cases, it is necessary to resort to the help of rheumatologists and traumatologists - orthopedists. So a great role in this matter is played by the competence of a specialist and his intuition.

Back pain can also occur with the destruction and damage of nerve roots due to any infectious processes, for example, with osteomyelitis or epiduritis. But this is also rare. Most often, in about 90% of cases, back pain is still caused by diseases of the musculoskeletal system, namely the spine or back muscles.

In addition, quite often people who have been sedentary for a long time complain of back pain, and then, suddenly, decided to go in for sports. In this case, the pain is most often caused by an overload of previously untrained muscles, as well as stretching of the spinal muscles and their subsequent spasm with a sudden sharp turn, jump, and so on.

So, do not forget that everything is good in moderation, everything must be done correctly. Of course, it is good to go in for sports, but before buying a gym membership, you should definitely consult with your doctor to determine the level of permissible load, otherwise you will have to go to the doctor for another reason.

By the way, mental factors can also provoke back pain. The fact is that emotional stress is accompanied not only by anxiety, but also by muscle tension. Therefore, chronic stress and depressive conditions are so dangerous.

Diagnostic methods to clarify the diagnosis

The first thing a doctor should do is, of course, to interview and examine the patient in detail. It is necessary to find out the nature of the course of pain, its localization. For example, if a patient says that in order for the pain to go away, he needs to disperse a little, then degenerative changes in the joints of the spine can be suspected.

And if the patient noticed that the pain intensifies after drinking a glass of beer, then, most likely, it is not about a back disease, but about a kidney disease. A highly qualified doctor is already at this stage able to diagnose a disease that causes back pain. Moreover, sometimes everything becomes clear already at the moment when the patient crosses the threshold of the office, it is enough to see how he walks or how he stands.

Although, of course, there are cases when it is necessary to carry out additional examinations in order to finally determine the diagnosis.

MRI of the spine to find out the cause of back pain

The most accurate diagnostic method today is considered to be magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. In the course of these studies, it is possible to examine in detail the structure of the spine, determine the presence or, conversely, the absence of hernias, the general condition of the vertebrae. The only drawback of these methods is their cost. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford such expenses.

But now more and more medical centers conclude contracts with medical insurance. This is a good trend, which allows more people in need to receive the necessary help and undergo the necessary diagnostics.

How is it treated today when it hurts?

Based on what was said above, it becomes extremely clear that it is the correct diagnosis that determines the further actions of the doctor and the treatment program, which will include certain methods of back treatment to relieve pain.

Modern medicine has three methods of treatment:

  1. drug therapy;
  2. non-drug therapy;
  3. surgery.

With drug therapy and surgery, everything is clear. The doctor either prescribes the drugs indicated in this case, or performs surgery, for example, to remove a hernia.

As for non-drug methods, these include: manual therapy, physiotherapy, percutaneous electrical neurostimulation (when the nervous system is stimulated with a weak electrical signal), massage, kinetotherapy with post-isometric muscle relaxation, physiotherapy exercises, and others.

But in fact, most often in the treatment of back pain, complex therapy is needed. This happens because the cause of these pains, as a rule, is a combination of several provoking factors. This can be, for example, inflammation and improper posture, improper load and inflammation, or inflammation and degenerative-dystrophic process, and so on. Suppose that a patient, as a result of sanogenetic mechanisms of neurological manifestations of diseases of the spine, develops myofascial pain, this very muscle contracts due to pain and inflammation, and when it contracts, the spine shifts. So it turns out that the pain associated with its displacement is added to the primary pain. It is very important to define the psychosocial aspect of pain.

Accordingly, such pain should be treated with several methods. This is the only way to achieve good results.

But besides this, the effectiveness of the treatment is largely dependent on the patient himself, on how carefully he follows the doctor's prescriptions, on the psychosocial status, as well as on how quickly the patient asked for help.

When should you seek help, when is it time to sound the alarm?

This is also a kind of problem. The fact is that people prefer to be treated on their own, and they go to doctors even when the process is so advanced that it is already difficult to walk. This is the wrong approach, timely seeking medical help is half the battle. Do not expect that everything will go away by itself. Yes, this option is sometimes possible, but the opposite is also possible, when the condition worsens and the pain intensifies.

Therefore, if you feel pain in your back, do not pull, do not be lazy, but at least consult your family doctor. If you have any minor sprain, then you can easily cope with his advice on your own, and, by the way, no one will force you to stand on the operating room. But if it turns out that the problem is serious, then you cannot do without the help of a qualified specialist, and the sooner it arrives, the better.

And yet, do not rush to climb into your home first-aid kit and swallow handfuls of pain-relieving pills that "helped your girlfriend, mother or grandmother so much", cover yourself with heating pads and smear yourself with all kinds of ointments. It is likely that you will not benefit from them, on the contrary. It is quite possible that you do not need them at all, and if you do, it is still better if they are appointed by a specialist.

Why is the behavior of those who do not like going to doctors and decided not to pay attention to the problem dangerous?

Do not underestimate the problem, do not wait for everything to pass. The least that you risk is that the disease will turn into a chronic form, and you will lose your ability to work for a long time, and just a normal full-fledged life.

If you have some serious pathology, for example, an injury or a rheumatological disease, then the lack of correct treatment can even lead to disability. Think about it!

There are various popular massage techniques, they are shown for back pain and is it not dangerous?

The centuries-old practice of using massage certainly speaks in its favor. Massage is used for general strengthening of the body, and to increase its defenses, and for the treatment of specific diseases such as diseases of the ligaments, joints, spine.

But there is one BUT! The massage should only be performed by a licensed professional who has at least a secondary medical education. You should not trust everyone in a row, because if the massage is performed incorrectly, then you can do a lot of harm. Moreover, there are also contraindications to this procedure, for example, diseases of internal organs, varicose veins, the postoperative period, etc.

Any disease is easier to prevent than to cure, does this also apply to back pain?

Certainly! It is better not to allow their occurrence at all, so as not to suffer later.

We must try to lead a healthy lifestyle, eat right, keep track of weight, exercise. These are general guidelines. Although, there are some special rules that will help you keep your spine healthy and prevent back pain.

The first is correct posture. It is very important how you stand, sit, walk and even lie down. No matter what position you are in, you don't have to slouch. Keep your back straight, do not stretch your neck forward. If you are sitting, make sure that your back rests on the back of a chair or chair, and your feet touch the floor.

If you have a sedentary job, then at least a few times a day get up, walk around the office, warm up. If there is a lot of work and there is no time to even get up, periodically change your posture, shift your body weight from one leg to the other.

If your work is associated with lifting weights, then do not make sudden movements, it is better to act slowly. It is best to first sit down, and then take the heavy thing you need, then the load will not be on the vertebral muscles, but on the thighs. This will help prevent back pain.

The second point is the bed on which you sleep. It is best if it is not too hard, not too soft. It is best to sleep lying on your side, so you relax and relieve the spine.

And the third point is physical activity. Be sure to go in for sports, but first consult with your doctor, he will select the necessary set of exercises for you that you can do both at home and in the gym, but without harm to your back.

Swimming is well suited, this sport is often recommended for various diseases, both for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes.

And one more piece of advice, it concerns more the beautiful half of humanity. Make sure that your shoes are comfortable, do not wear very high heels every day, this is also a strain on your back.
